Block paved & shingle driveways
There can be few home improvements that have such an immediate impact as a new block paved or shingle driveway. A tired old drive can really detract from an otherwise good property and adding further parking space can be a real convenience that will undoubtedly add value.
On our predominantly clay ground preparation is crucial. We generally excavate 250mm and install a 150mm base of compacted Type 1 limestone. This is a minimum requirement and often a thicker base is installed together with a geotextile fabric if required.
The main thing is to employ an experienced contractor like ourselves, who can assess the ground conditions and construct the driveway accordingly. Driveway planning & advice
During our site visit we will be able to advise you on block pavior choice, drainage and what we will need to do to comply with the recent "paving in front gardens", ( SUDS ), planning rules.
Planning is rarely required as long as the drainage is dealt with correctly. As Approved Contractors of the Ecogrid permeable paving system, we are able to construct shingle, Cotswold chipping and gravel driveways that are fully permeable but avoid the problems of crushing, spreading and pot holes. Tumbled Block Paviors
This style of block pavior has a time-worn appearance. Whilst suitable for most properties, it looks particularly good in period settings where a traditional, classic look is desirable. Available in a range of sizes with matching kerbs, circles, octants and other features that make this style of pavior particularly versatile.
We highly recommend Marshall's Drivesett Tegula, Bradstone Woburn and Brett Alpha Antique for this style of paving.
Some people refer to this as "cobble style" block paving or "Drivesett" style paving after the popular Marshalls Drivesett range.
Block Paving
Instantly recognisable, this style of block pavior is suitable for most modern properties. Available in a wide range of colours, matching kerbs and circle features, the layout options are numerous.
We recommend the Marshall's Driveline and Bradstone Driveflair ranges for this style of paving. This type of block paving is usually the most affordable block paving option, they are made to the same high standards as other paviors but their popularity and high production numbers lead to a very competitive manufacturer price which we pass on to our clients.

Driveway Horror Stories
We've all heard of and seen driveway horrors. People often say that block paving sinks or concrete cracks. You've probably seen shingle parking areas in front gardens with mud coming up through. None of these problems are to do with the product, it's all down to using the right installation procedures and materials.

Shingle Driveways
Shingle driveways are a popular option to block paving, it's a fair bit cheaper and there are usually no drainage issues to consider because the drives are fully permeable.
Depending on the area, we recommend Newbury flint, Cotswold chippings or Cerney gravel as the best options. Newbury is the most durable but in some parts of the Cotswold's, ( for instance ), clients often feel Cotswold chippings are more in keeping with the surroundings.
Using a combination of shingle areas and block paving can be a way of having the best of both worlds; hard paving to park on with a shingle driveway, ( or vice versa if you like ).
Another option is to use the excellent Ecogrid system. This system is basically a grid of interlocking units that form an extremely strong "mat" with open pockets that are filled with shingle, ( and other materials ). Once installed, the mat is virtually invisible and now you have a driveway that has the benefits of shingle without the worries of spreading and crushing.
